I decided to challenge myself by finding some great alternatives for his sweet tooth. Since I had already reduced my daily sugar intake a few years back I don't require a lot of sweetness in my food but knew he would expect to taste the sweet. There have been many failed attempts (like cutting the amount of sugar or chocolate chips by half in my Mom's cookie recipe) that have been tossed in the garbage. After those many attempts, I finally found some great "low sugar treats" that he actually enjoys!
He loved the strawberry banana ice cream. It's so smooth and creamy. I like to play around with the recipe and sometimes add a drizzle of honey or change the strawberries to frozen pineapple and add a little unsweetened coconut on top when I serve it. Yum!
I also found these delicious whole wheat muffins on 100 Days of Real Food website. Now one of his favorites! I sometimes add about a half cup of mini chocolate chips or a mashed banana and extra cinnamon for a little more sweetness that my husband craves. As you can see the sugar might not be completely cut from the recipes (i.e. adding some chocolate chips) but it's a very limited amount compared to the mints or cookies.
I plan to continue experimenting in the kitchen (which I love being creative in the kitchen) and will share other sweet successes with you. If you have a favorite recipe using honey, maple syrup or other natural sweeteners, I would love to hear about them.
I am excited to say my husband has gone about 15 days now with eating very limited amounts of sugary snacks and desserts. He doesn't plan to completely cut out sugar but to have more control over his portions throughout the day. Cutting back on something we crave is really hard but every little step can be a great change for your health!
